Changing Landscape

Acrylic on Stretched Canvas- 900mm high x 1200mm high.

Statement written on this artwork:

By Stacey Howell, Harrisons Gallery Master Framer

This artwork reminds me of how proud I am to be a kiwi. It represents so much of what makes us all New Zealanders; cows, farming, clear blue skies and loads of green grass!  Sometimes it can be easily forgotten when you live and work in the city just how clean and green we are as a country.  With ‘Changing Landscape’ its like having your own window into the rural life of New Zealand, it just reminds us that yes, we still have many wide open spaces with no hustle and bustle, no traffic jams, and plenty of clean fresh air.

When Dean put paint to canvas, I think his main intention was to inform the viewer on how much our landscape has changed over the past 30 years. Once, we governed a booming sheep industry for export trade and now dairy has far exceeded sheep farming.

Blocks of colour make up the majority of this work which is one of the main attributes of Dean’s style.  Simple yet effective, the clean lines and limited colour palette lend to a very contemporary painting.  The sky has a gradient of colours that to me represent first morning light and while the rest of the painting has no shading or shadowing as such, the sky and the composition has still given it depth.

In July 2010, 4.3 million New Zealanders call this country home and just topping that, a mere 4.4 million dairy cows!
