Nigel Wilson - Central Otago (Oil Landscape)

Nigel Wilson grew up in Wellington and has a fine arts degree from Ilam, University of Canterbury. He has been a full-time artist since leaving his professional teaching career in 1997. He has focused on the dramatic landscape of Otago, with a vibrantly colourful and loosely expressive brushstroke to evoke an emotional response to the location, alongside an essential sense of loose form.

Nigel usually works in series, each work focusing as its subject, on a particular region in Central Otago/Lakes District area.  Nigel states "I try to bring a lot of spontaneity and immediacy to my work, I'm an energetic painter, expressive and colourful.  If I become too careful I'm in danger of creating an image that is too stiff and contrived, which doesn't interest me...".  Nigel’s work has been described as capturing the raw, natural beauty and distinct character of New Zealand's southern landscapes.
