About The Artist

Bev was born in Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Natal in Pietermartizberg, South Africa. She later went on to study a Certificate in Desktop Publishing and Computer Graphics. Having received a full scholarship, she then completed an Honours Diploma in Art. She immigrated to New Zealand in 1987 where she married her husband, Marshall in 1989. She has resided in Tauranga since 1992. Bev worked at the Beacon Arts and Educational Centre from 1992-1994 before leaving to open her own studio.

Exhibition Experience

Beverly has had several solo and group exhibitions spanning the last twenty five years. Her work is held in private and corporate collections in Africa, New Zealand and the UK. She has won several art awards with distinction when she resided in Rhodesia. She is also listed in the Who’s Who of New Zealand Artists.

The Works

"As an improvisational painter my latest body of paintings relate to my fascination with the sea. These works in acrylic vibrate with the expressive use of the medium beyond the obvious: I try to bring out the deeper connotations and hidden beauty of my subject.

"The intention of my paintings are to feed the imagination and soul of the viewer. These are not superficial pieces sure to please the market; they are authentic expressions of my deepest feelings. My technique has developed a means of expression that gives my work a unique personal interpretation and painterly genuineness.

"My work usually begins in a free spontaneous manner using acrylic paint. With brushes and brayers I apply the paint with abandon, watching its mixing and diffusing properties for unexpected happenings that I may want to retain – at least temporarily. When the basic layers have dried, I study the work and begin to apply artistic control to strengthen design and intensify or diminish colour or bring out areas of shape suggesting natural form.

"My main interest is implying nature, rather than depicting it literally. This takes thoughtful organization of composition. I then apply dynamic control to the work in front of me to bring it to its artistic conclusion."
